ISU Students Analyze a local Business

Students enrolled in the Financial Modeling Course (FIN 439) at Indiana State University completed the first module on financial statement modeling by analyzing a new business to Terre Haute, IN. 5th Street Nutrition is a health club that opened in downtown Terre Haute in the summer of 2019 and a unique gathering spot for students.

Each student was tasked with creating a pro forma financial statement, sales estimates, and the enterprise value of the health club in less than one week. Students spent the week analyzing the business externally, as well as sampling some of the products. The analysis was made more challenging by the fact that 5th Street Nutrition has been open for less than a year.

After completing their investigation, each student gave a short presentation. The presentations highlighted the creative ways students used to estimate sales; including Google trend data, global warming factors, and even using comparable weight loss company data. At the conclusion of the project, many students expressed their enjoyment of working with a local business.

Student Comments:

* Working on this project gave me a perspective on a business that I frequent. It gave me outside experience that I hoped to gain from the Scott College of Business. - MM
